Write a critical review of Plutarch Life of Crassus Essay
Write a critical review of Plutarch Life of Crassus - Essay Example s necessary to take into account inappropriate behavior of the great ancient leaders and it would be better to focus on their strengths and not on their vices. There is no need to focus on the biography of Crassus if not to consider moral and ethical implications provided by Plutarch in this biography. There is a lot of incongruence and the biography of Crassus is rather imbalanced. The way Plutarch describes Crassus head, which is served to the Parthian king is a way of ambitious depiction of the negative side of glory. There are two main drawbacks, which Crassus has: the first one is his ambition and the second one is avarice. Plutarch is a magnificent bibliographer. The lives of ancient Greeks are highly informative and the personalities, who were described by Plutarch, are extraordinary and leading people of the ancient times. The main feature of bibliographical discussions by Plutarch is the reflection of his personal opinion. The Life of Crassus is evidently considered from a negative perspective. On the example of Crassus Plutarch intends to teach a moral lesson to his readers. The main negative feature of Crassus was his avarice. Moreover, this vice was dominant over all other vices, because the other vices could be crossed by the vice of avarice (Plutarch, The Life of Crassus). This claim was positioned by Plutarch in the beginning of biography of Crassus. Therefore, the readers consider Crassus from a negative perspective. Other virtues of Crassus are opposed to the main vice of the main character. Plutarch underlines the main vice of Crassus in an intensive manner (Zadorojniy, 1997). Otherwise, the readers would not be so much concerned about avarice as the main vice of Crassus. In such a way, Plutarch positions greed as the main destructive feature of Crassus. Still, Crassus is positioned as a kind man and we cannot claim that this character is bad to the bones. He often helped people in time and thus people relied on him greatly. Moreover,

Employment Law and Practice - Essay Example In unfair dismissal claims costs are rarely recoverable. By contrast,à it is reverse a successful employer or employee may recover legal costs in a wrongful dismissal claim in the normal civil courts. 2 The method of how compensation is to be calculated is also different. In wrongful dismissal claims, the measure of damages is calculated upon comparing the employee in such a position they would have been in had they received payment for the proper notice to which they were eligible under their contract. In unfair dismissal claims, the calculation is based on the basic award based on a mathematical formula, and also includes a compensatory award, which will usually encompass loss extending beyond the end of the notice period. A dismissal can be both wrongful and unfair at the same time, so compensation paid by the employer for wrongful dismissal will usually be set off against the compensatory award granted of an unfair dismissal award. 3 Another important difference is that in wrongful dismissal casesà the employer can rely on facts, which he finds out or gets; intimation after the employee has been dismissed (see Boston Deep Sea Fishing v Ansell [1888] 4. In unfair dismissal cases, what is the important factor to be taken into account is that the employer knew at the time the employee was dismissed. The difference between the concepts of unfair dismissal and wrongful dismissal can be illustrated by example where an employer has dismissed an employee who has committed a breach of contract, example can be, an act of gross misconduct which occurs in respect to the heart for the contract. In a wrongful dismissal claim, the employee will not be entitled to pay in respect or lieu of notice or notice pay at all, here as the employee has broken the contract and cannot therefore rely on it to claim notice pay. With an unfair dismissal claim, the employer

Gear and Equipment Responsibility Essay Example for Free
Gear and Equipment Responsibility Essay My gear and equipment is my own personal responsibility. My gear was issued to me with the intent of me to keep track of my gear and to make sure my gear is ready and accessible when need be. It is my own personal responsibility to make sure that at all times my gear is stored or secured in a safe place to make sure that nothing is either damaged, lost or stolen. It is my own personal responsibility to ensure that if anything were to happen to my gear that it should be reported immediately, such as damaged or malfunctioning gear or lost gear. If my gear is broken or malfunctioning it is my own personal responsibility to see to it that if I cannot personally fix my gear that through the chain of command someone is notified until a solution to the problem is found and the problem itself is fixed. If my gear is to ever be lost or stolen it is again my own personal responsibility to go through the chain of command notifying those appointed over me of my lost or stolen and gear. To lose my gear or have it stolen is something that should never happen though. Every Marine is responsible for his or her own gear and irresponsibly losing the gear that is issued to each individual Marine shows a lack of responsibility. If a Marines gear is stolen it shows poor judgment on the Marine that believed he or she could leave his or her gear laying out and lack of integrity on the part of the Marine that stole the other Marines gear. A Marine should show better judgment in where he or she stows his or her gear. A Marine is issued his or her own individual gear with the intent of it being his or her own personal gear but to leave his or her own gear lying about, wherever he or she so pleases is not in any way, shape or form showing good judgment but lack of responsibility issued to that Marine. Every Marine is responsible for his or her own personal gear and is a reflection of what to possibly expect from the irresponsible Marine. A Marine should always be aware of his or her own personal gear at all times and make sure that his or her own personal gear is properly stowed or secured in secure location to prevent such instances of theft or misplacing his or her own gear. Alternatively, each and every Marine should know that if he or she is not able to stow his or her gear in a safe or secure location than to entrust another Marine to watch over his or her gear until a place to secure his or her own gear is found to ensure that the Marines gear is safe from theft and no excuse for misplacing his or her own gear would be an acceptable answer when questioned as to how the Marines gear went missing or was stolen.

Relationship between Chopins Life and The Awakening Essay -- Chopin
Relationship between Chopin's Life and The Awakening Katherine O'Flahtery Chopin was born in St. Louis, Missouri February 8,1851. She was the daughter of Thomas and Eliza O'Flaherty, a prominent Irish-born merchant and his wife. Together, Chopin's parents represented freedom and the American dream. Their ambition and spirit helped mold Chopin into a unique character with independence and intelligence. Her father died suddenly when Chopin was four years old. His death was the result of a terrible accident that took the lives of several civic leaders when the key link to the Pacific Railroad was being completed and a bridge collapsed. After Thomas O'Flahtery's death, Katherine's childhood was most profoundly influenced by her mother and grandmother, women of French Creole pioneers. As a child, Chopin spent much of her time with her family's Creole and mulatto slaves, whose dialects she mastered. She studied piano, wrote poetry, and read books by such famous authors as Dickens, Austen, and Goethe. Although Katherine displayed a very indep endent and responsible personality, she was once nicknamed the littlest rebel for yanking down a Union flag. However, despite her free spirit, Chopin grew to be a leading social belle, admired for her wit and beauty. As a debutante, Chopin was an undistinguished student at the convent school named the St. Louis Academy of the Sacred Heart. She graduated at age seventeen and spent two years as a young woman of fashionable St. Louis society. It was then that the young Katherine O'Flaherty met Oscar Chopin, a wealthy Creole cotton factor. In the year 1870, Kate married Oscar and, for the next decade, Kate Chopin pursued the demanding social and domestic schedule of a wealthy wife and mother. ... ...r that surrounded the publication of The Awakening, and its harsh reception is what ultimately stopped her from writing. She felt that because of the vast amount of controversy and criticism she received because of The Awakening, there was no future for her as an author. Chopin devoted the last few years of her life to her family. Katherine O'Flaherty Chopin died of a cerebral hemorrhage on August 22, 1904 at the age of 53. Many felt that Kate Chopin had been denied the recognition she desperately wanted and richly deserved. As well as The Awakening, other of Chopin's writings are receiving the critical acclaim that they had been neglected. The short stories collected in Bayou Folk and A Night in Acadie established Chopin as an important writer of local-color fiction. Works Cited: Chopin, Kate. The Awakening. 1899. Okonkw’s Insecurity
There are a lot of factors in a personââ¬â¢s life that contribute to their feeling of insecurity. Certain events might cause that, mostly it tends to be childhood events. Men usually try to hide their insecure feelings by making sure they appear strong and masculine while deep down they could be very weak. A person feeling insecure is normal but insecurity taking over a person might result in his downfall. Thatââ¬â¢s what happened to Okonkwo in Things Fall Apart.Okonkwoââ¬â¢s obsession with what others think of him started from an early age, which would drive him to be insecure. Okonkwoââ¬â¢s father is the reason for Okonkwoââ¬â¢s insecurity. His dad being viewed as a nothing would make Okonkwo wants to be viewed as everything his father wasnââ¬â¢t. Okonkwoââ¬â¢s first priority is to maintain his masculinity in front of people, which would lead him to success at first. But, later on he would be so afraid to look weak, that he breaks a lot of tribal rules just to keep his image intact.Okonkwo starts breaking the rules by beating his youngest wife Ojiugo during the week of peace because she left the hut without cooking dinner. He later one does another fatal error that would start leading to his fall down, he kills the boy which called him father although the clanââ¬â¢s leader and the authorities told him not to. Okonkwo loved Ikemfuna but he still killed him because he resembles any feelings with femininity and for him any sign of femininity is being weak. Feeling weak inside, Okonkwo would do actions to make people feel down.Insecure people insult others because they think that, by making someone else down; it will make them feel better about themselves. That's exactly what Okonkwo does when he tells Sugo ââ¬â a man without titles- ââ¬Å"This meeting is for men,â⬠who implies that he is not a man, but actually a woman, who is a weak creature in Okonkwo's view. The reason why Okonkwo specifically attacked Sugo by implying that h e is a woman is because insecure people attack the things they are most afraid of.Another reason why he constantly criticizes people is because, deep down, he feels inferior. This particularly shows when his wife, Ekwefi, says ââ¬Å"guns that never shotâ⬠. He immediately translates that as a critique of his masculinity. As a result, he starts beating her, thinking that this will prove his masculinity, while it totally shows the opposite. It actually makes him seem weaker. Okonkwo hides all his emotions under a mask because he associates any form of emotion, such as compassion and love, to being feminine.Okonkwo tries to hide his emotions from his daughter Ezinma. Although she is his favorite child, he refuses to show her any kind of emotion, supposedly, to maintain his masculinity. Another example of how Okonkwo tries to hide how he feels is when he kills his ââ¬Å"sonâ⬠Ikemefuna. Upon killing him, Okonkwo feels too much pain inside of him that he thinks of himself as a ââ¬Å"womanâ⬠. However, afraid of being viewed as weak, he keeps trying to hide his feelings. Instead, his body responds and starts to weaken without him noticing it.

Analysis of the Wood Pile - 1335 Words
THE WOOD-PILE: A COMMUNION WITH NATURE Robert Frost s poem, The Wood-Pile, focuses on a man who adventures himself in a frozen swamp. Away from home, he fears the environment surrounding him. Until a small bird, flies ahead of him and draws his attention on a decayed woodpile. This marks a turning point in the poem. The man, hypnotized by the wood pile, feels more comfortable because he knows humans were here before him. He enters in some sort of communion with nature. In his line by line analysis of Frosts poem On the Woodpile, J.Donald Crowley states that home is a place where one feel s comfortable and lives peacefully with his self. Through his poem, Frost explains home is an abstraction lost and gained through several stageâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This comes at a point where gently mocks the bird for being too self-centered, for thinking that the whole world would be interested in its feathers (Frost, line 14). The bird seeks comfort by hiding behind the woodpile, likely to hide from the speaker. But unexpected ly the man s attention is drawn by the pile of wood. We can convey the speaker is a person who has the leisure and the curiosity to follow whatever path his imagination leads him too. Going into details my analysis approaches Frost s poem differently, but doesn t disagree with Crowley s. But we indeed both said the bird opened the speaker s eyes on his situation, recognizing his homelessness in this environment. Unquestionably, the title of the poem The Wood-Pile, clearly announces it will be the main focus of the poem. The wood pile and the speaker enter in some sort of communion. It facilitates the establishment of harmonic relation between the speaker and nature. He will learn about his self by exploring the nature (It is a recurrent aspect in Frost s poetry). The accumulation of and (Frost, 23-25) gives an acute description of the pile of wood four by four by eight (Frost, 24). The wood pile comforts him. It s the proof of human presence in this area. He describes the woodpile as old. Flowers are growing around it. So the woodpile is sort of a life nest. It s a symbol of rebirth. Diversification refers to the strategies of reducing economic risk by investing in assets whose performance is not affected by the same economic variables. A group of assets forms a portfolio. A company can have two types of economic risks; financial risks and total operating risks. Financial risk results from use of debt capital in the companys structure and it is usually measured using the gearing ratio. Gearing ratio is found by dividing total debt capital with equity and then multiplying the quotient with a hundred percent. The higher the gearing ratio the higher the risk The total operating risk is the fluctuation of the companys expected earnings of portfolio due to the nature of the industry in which the company operates. Total risk is a combination of systematic and unsystematic risk. Systematic risk is the variation in return of securities due to factors which systematically affect all firms adversely such as war, recession and high interest rate. Syst ematic risks are therefore not diversifiable and the concept of diversification cannot apply to them. Based on this argument then, it is correct to say that a large fire that relentlessly affects three major U.S. cites is a systematic risk and systematic risks are not diversifiable. Unsystematic risk is the variation in return of a company or a security due to factors unique or specific to a particular company or portfolio. These are the factors such as legal suits, winning or losing in a major contract, successful or unsuccessful marketing strategy. Since these events are random, they can be eliminated by diversification where bad events in one firm will be offset by a good event in the other. A significant anticipated increase in oil prices and a major legal suit against a public company are unsystematic risks which can be eliminated by portfolio diversification. Factors affecting the efficiency of a portfolio include the number of securities forming the portfolio and the na ture of relationship between return of security forming the portfolio. Research has shown that between twenty and twenty five well selected securities will form an efficient portfolio. The nature of relationship between return of security forming the portfolio can either be positive or negative. Security returns are assumed to have a negative relationship if a given economic factor affects their performance in the opposite direction. Therefore for risk diversification negative relationship is recommended. Capital asset pricing model Given that the return of asset i is 10%, the risk free rate is 3% and the Beta (b) for Asset I is 1.5 the expected rate of return of the market portfolio is given by: Expected return of market portfolio will be abbreviated as E_Rm Beta for asset I will be abbreviated as B_i Risk free rate will be abbreviated as R_f Market return for asset I will be abbreviated as R_i E_Rm = R_f + B_i (R_i- R_f ) E_Rm = 3% + 1.5 (10% 3%) = 13.5 If the expected rate of return on asset j is 14%, the Beta of the asset is 1.5 and the expected return on the market portfolio is 12% then by rearranging the CAPM we can find the risk free rate. 12% = R_f + 1.5 (14% -? R?_f ) 21%-12%=1.5 R_f- ? R?_f 0.5 ? R?_f = 9 ? R?_f = 18% The Beta of an entire market portfolio is usually equal to one therefore the Beta of a portfolio containing half of the stocks in the entire market is zero point five (0.5) Message of CAPM to corporate and investors CAPM allows the analyst to split the total risk of security into portions namely diversifiable and non diversifiable risk. It provides a framework for measuring systematic risk of an individual security and relating it to the systematic risk of a well diversified portfolio. CAPM states that the risk that remains after diversification can be measured by the degree to which the given stock tends to move up and down in the market (the sensitivity of the returns to changes in mark et portfolio). Systematic risk can be measured by Beta factor. To investors and corporate CAPM allows them to identify extent of diversifiable risk in their portfolio and contrasts this risk to an ideal portfolio. CAPM also allows investors and corporate apply the security market line (SML). The tradeoff between market risk and return in a well diversified portfolio is represented by the security market line. This is important for corporate as they strive to achieve optimal market portfolio in order to achieve the best return and attract investors. SML is similar to capital market line (CML) except in the following ways; CML deals with total risk as measured by standard deviation while SML deals with systematic risk as measured by beta factor. The CML deals with efficient portfolios while the SML deals with individual security. Since investors deal with individual securities they can apply SML. Corporations can use CML since they are interested in total risk. The main message of CAPM is therefore; a market portfolio is representative of all the securities in the market, a security with a Beta factor equal to one means all securities in the market are represented in the in the portfolio, a security with a Beta factor more than one is said to be more sensitive and less than one is sad to be less sensitive. The risk free rate is represented by the treasury bills and government bonds rate of return. Donââ¬â¢t waste time!
